My Clients' Web Sites Make Them More Money

Let’s face it, unless you are putting up a personal web site, the only reason you would put up a web site is because you want more business.  So, it constantly amazes me how many business web sites fail to make their owners any money simply because they are concentrating on the wrong aspects of the web site.

Who Am I and Why Should You Listen to Me?

Hi, my name is Dave, and I’ve been developing web sites since Al Gore “invented the Internet”  Seriously, I developed my first web site using NotePad because there were no other tools available.  I’ve been programming for over 2o years now too.  I’ve seen a lot of changes in the industry and I’ve seen a lot of things done wrong.

Once I got on the Internet I started learning Search Engine Optimization, the art and science of getting a web site listed on the first page of the search engines for specific search phrases.  I’ve gotten pretty good at that over the years and without going into a lot of detail, I can tell you that what most people think they know about getting traffic to their web site is just flat out wrong.  I can also tell you that doing it right cost about $10,000 per year.

Well, one thing led to another and you can’t study search too long without also learning about Internet marketing.  So, I’ve spent the last 5 years also spending time learning how to get the traffic I get coming to a site to convert to sales.

As a great example of what I can do, I’ve managed to get my blog in the Alexa top 100,000 in about a year and a half.  For those of you who don’t know about Alexa, getting a site in the top 100,000 is a major accomplishment.  Especially when there are over 5 million sites you are ranking against.

I also had a web hosting company that I sold recently that was position 4 in Google for “asp.net web hosting”

So, what you get if you ask me to develop your web site for you is a web developer who knows Internet marketing.  Not a web developer who knows how to put up flashy “gee wiz” sites.

In fact,

Flashy Sites Only Make the Web Designer Money

It’s true.  Think about the two most popular sites on the web.  Google, and Amazon.  Not exactly a designer’s dream site.

  • Are they easy to use?
  • Can you find what you are looking for?

Actually, Amazon is kind of pushing the edge on this, but compared to most sites, they are still easier to use than what most business owner’s expect.

It Isn’t the Web Designer’s Fault

He’s only selling what most business owners think they want.  If I were a web designer instead of a business coach, I’d be selling the same flashy designs.  A guy has to make a living, right?

And It Isn’t Your Fault

I mean really!  You aren’t a web expert, you are an expert at what you are selling.  If no one has told you this before, how were you suppose to know?  So, here’s a short education…

How To Develop a Web Site

Interview – Why do you want a web site?

When I sit down with you to design your web site, one of the first question I’m going to ask you is, “What is it that you want your visitor to do when they show up at your site?”

This needs to be something that is measurable.  Do you want them to buy your product?  Sign up for a news letter?  Fill out a contact us form?

It might help to answer that question by asking yourself, “Why do I want a web site at all?”  A bad answer to that question is, “because I was told I need a web site.”

Research – Is the site worth building?

Once I have some idea of what your site is suppose to accomplish, I will do some research on the web to determine how much traffic you can expect to get for your new site as well as some related topics that people will use to search for a site like yours.  This will help us later on in the content creation and traffic generation phase of building your site.  I will communicate this information to you so you can determine how much value your new site will have to you.

Design – Nice looking but not flashy

Once we’ve determined what the purpose of your web site is, we will look at the design.  I’ll have you go find 3 web sites that you like and send me the links to them.  I’ll use that information to create or find a similar theme and send that to you for review.  You will tell me what you like and don’t like about the theme or themes I’ve selected.  I’ll use that information to tweak or find a new theme which I will send back for your review.

Content Creation – Give the visitor what they are looking for

With the research and design out of the way, we can create a web site that meets the goals you specified during the initial interview and has information on it that your customers will be looking for.  Consistent content creation is a key component to your site found in the search engines.  I can take care of the content creation or you can.

Traffic Generation – Getting eyeballs in front of your offer

“If you build it, they will come.” sounds great in the movies, but in the real world you have to let them know it exist too.  There are a multitude of ways this can be achieve including paying for the traffic or engineering factors so the site can be found in natural search.  Once the site is up, I will concentrate on this aspect of your business.

Tracking – Is it working?

Finally, we will install tracking code on your site so that we can tell how effective we’ve been.  How long are people staying on your site?  On your page?  When do they stop reading?  How did they find the site?  What search terms did they use to get there?

If we don’t know this information, we can’t improve the site.  Tracking is a critical component of your site that will keep us moving toward increased sales for your business.

Don’t Contract Your Web Site Unless it Meets These Criteria

  • The developer ask you what you want your visitors to end up doing as a result of visiting the web site.
  • The developer has a track record of sites that have traffic.
  • The developer has a track record of increasing sales.
  • The developer can tell you how many visitors you can expect to come to your site.
  • The developer can tell you how many sales you can expect as a result of your web traffic.
  • The developer expresses a desire to be a partner with you in developing your web presence.
  • The developer will continue to suggest improvements and tracks the changes to determine the effectiveness of those changes.
